2016 International Conference on Educational Innovation & Award Ceremony for Asia-Pacific Educational Innovation (Wenhui) Held in Beijing
On November 20 and 21, the 2016 International Conference on Educational Innovation & Award Ceremony for Asia-Pacific Educational Innovation (Wenhui) was held in Beijing.Jointly sponsored by the UNESCO Field Offices in the Asia-Pacific Region, National Commission of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for UNESCO, and the Chinese Society of Education (CSE), and organized by the Education Commission of Haidian District, Beijing, the Conference was attended by approximately 400 domestic and overseas delegates in the field of education.
It is learned that the Jury Meeting of Wenhui Award was held in September in Beijing. Members of the Jury Meeting included senior scholars in education with rich experience in academic evaluation from different countries of the Asia-Pacific region.This year, Wenhui Award received 58 applications and 15 of them entered the shortlist. Finally, the Science of Life Studies 24/7 (Malaysia) and Organization for Awareness of Integrated Social Security (India)became the winners of the 2016 Wenhui Award, and four organizations won the Honorable Commendations, including the Dhaka Ahsania Mission (Bangladesh), Institute of Technical Education (Singapore), OzGREEN Global Rivers Environmental Education Network Australia Inc.(Australia), and Plan International in Asia (Thailand).
It is noteworthy that since 2016, the review of Excellence Award for China Educational Innovation of Wenhui Award organized by CSE has been conducted nationwide, selecting outstanding projects of educational innovation and awarding one excellent organization or individual every year. The aims underlying it are to better spread the philosophy and experience of Wenhui Award, encourage Chinese educators to make continuous exploration and innovation to improve the education quality, and promote international exchanges and cooperation in basic education in China. This year,the Haidian Institute of Education Sciences in Beijing won the First Excellence Award for China Educational Innovation of Wenhui Award with the educational project themed on “Climate Changes” in Primary and Secondary Schools.
At the opening ceremony, ZhongBinglin, President of CSE, delivered a speech. According to him,the Wenhui Award advocates education with equity, harmony, quality and sustainable development. Committed to building a harmonious and vibrant cultural circle of the Asia-Pacific region that seeks win-win outcomes, the Award is highly consistent with the core idea of the “2030 Agenda” released on the World Education Congress, and puts the theme of “developing global partnerships” proposed by the United Nations into practice in the Asia-Pacific region. It is stressed by him that CSE,as the constructor and pioneer of China’s basic education, highly values the international development of education and hopes to accelerate the internationalization of China’s basic education and to build a platform for dialogues between China and other countries on basic education through the introduction of UNESCO’s forward-looking educational ideas.
After the award ceremony, the Conference held a forum themed on “Quality, Inclusiveness and Innovation—Educational Cooperation and Development in the Strategic Background of ‘Belt and Road’” and the Conclusion Meeting for the Basic Education Internationalization Programme of CSE Educational Reform Pilot Zone (Haidian District).
Introduction to Wenhui Award
I. Background Information
Wenhui Award is designed to honor educators or educational institutions that have made outstanding contributions to educational innovation and development and that have improved the education quality through educational innovation in the Asia-Pacific region. At present, it is the only academic award for Asia-Pacific educational innovation funded by China.
Since its establishment in 2010, this annual Award, guided by the goal of “promoting the education development and improving the education quality through innovation” over the past seven years,has been dedicated to advocating more education opportunities, educational equity, quality education and learning, and education for sustainable development, as well as promoting the philosophy of lifelong learning for all. The Award leads the innovation and development of Asia-Pacific basic education.

III. Characteristics of Wenhui Award
Since 2015, CSE has participated in and organized the review and award ceremony of Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation in the Asia-Pacific region, which was jointly established by UNESCO-APEID and the National Commission of PRC for UNESCO. It aims to better promote the philosophy and experience of Wenhui Award, to encourage continuous exploration and innovation in improving the education quality, to facilitate the implementation of the Incheon Declaration in the Asia-Pacific region and China, as well as to carry out the “Belt and Road” initiative and to promote China’s innovation and international exchanges in basic education.
In order to promote international exchanges and cooperation in basic education, CSE has begun the review of Excellence Award for China Educational Innovation of Wenhui Award since 2016. It will select outstanding projects of educational innovation nationwide and award one excellent organization or individual every year.
